Different Together

Every person is different right? No two people are identical. We all look different, dress different, joke different, process different. Being different is not bad. I think culture is starting to accept that as well. Not everyone thinks the same and not everyone believes the same. This has been a progress to culture and in some ways a negative to Christianity. Here are four things I believe about being different.

1. We aren’t that different.

I personally don’t believe we are all that different from each other. We all are human. We were all created. We all have emotions. We all have stress. We all need food. We all have needs. We all desire safety. We all desire security. We all desire some form of love.

Now granted some of those things look different from person to person, but when we break it down aren’t we all just people trying to figure out life. Aren’t we all lazy, watching too much Netflix, waiting on microwaved food to finish cooking? No, thats just me? Okay I’ll move on to my next point.

2. We shouldn’t force being different.

Being different just to be different is a false identity. If you are being different to get back at someone or to be popular/fit in you’re not being different you’re being like everyone else. Posting perfect selfies don’t make you different they make you like every other millennial Instagram user. We can’t be different for any other reason than this, different is who we are called to be.

3. We are called to be different

The Bible tells Christians that we are called to be different. We are set apart. We are God’s people and because of that we have been called to follow his ways. His ways are different. They are different then the ways of the world and the status quo of culture. God’s way of being different is to be open. God’s way is for us to be our true self. No hiding, no faking, but rather it is about being vulnerable.

4. We shouldn’t be different alone

When you realize this calling to be different. When you truly embrace being vulnerable and open. When you are your true self life can become tough. I think of an example from the Bible. If you want the full story click here. The short version is this. A king decides to take a bunch of teenagers and make them adapt to a new culture. One rule he puts in place is that everyone must bow to a statue of him. Three of these teenagers however refuse to bow down. They are eventually sentenced to death and God rescues them. The main point to draw from this story is that they didn’t do it alone. They stood together. They were different together.

So, here are my final thoughts. Find people in your life who you can be yourself with. People who encourage you and allow you to be different. Life is hard, but it’s a little easier with others supporting you. Don’t be different alone.
